The horizon leans forward,
Offering you space to place new steps of change.
Here, on the pulse of this fine day
You may have the courage
To look up and out upon me,
The rock, the river, the tree, your country.
No less to Midas than the mendicant.
No less to you now than the mastodon then.
Here on the pulse of this new day
You may have the grace to look up and out
And into your sister's eyes,
Into your brother's face, your country
And say simply
Very simply
With hope
Good morning.

Maya Angelou, On the Pulse of Morning
1993 William Jefferson Clinton Inaugural Poem

FROM THE CURATOR

In the literal sense, a horizon is the boundary between the Earth and sky. A superficially simple concept, horizons have been a vital tool for navigation and telling time for millennia: an elusive and constantly changing visual marker of where the known and the unknown converge. When displayed on a two-dimensional canvas, the horizon serves as the host of a single vanishing point, swallowing orthogonal lines in the name of linear perspective.

The horizon is just as much a metaphor as it is a physical—yet unreachable—place. In literature, poetry, and visual art, we are offered the horizon as a symbol of hope, growth, change, and opportunity. It is, in truth, unknowably more complex; a collapse of infinite possibilities into a single, condensed reality.

Beyond the Horizon investigates the concept of the horizon in different ways: both obvious and abstract. The hazy threshold between childhood and adulthood, the sublime separation of our home on Earth and the measureless vacuum of space, and the perceived shapes that beckon us into spaces activated by our imaginations are themes we invite you to explore.
